Before you choose a theme, though, it’s a good idea to gather all the resources you’re going to need in one place. Swift Publisher has lots of templates for you to choose from. You could start with a blank page, but there are few things scarier when you’re laying out a booklet for the first time than staring at blank white space. Once you’ve planned your booklet or e-book, and created the content for it, it’s time to lay it out. And, if you use Ulysses or Scrivener to write your content, you can even synchronize projects with Aeon Timeline. It’s a great way to visualize a creative project - you can zoom in to see the detail and zoom out again to see an overview. Events can have notes, keywords, and images added to them, and you can link them to other documents. It’s a great place to start before you even open your book layout software. You can use it for planning scenes in a novel, or for the process of publishing a booklet. This brilliant tool allows you to map out your project so you can see when the event takes place, how long they take, and which other events they overlap. One of the best tools for planning any creative project is Aeon Timeline. ![]() That way you can prepare the content, gather all the text and images, and have everything ready to go when you start to lay it out. If you want to make a booklet or publish an eBook, you really need to plan it first. It’s not a direct InDesign competitor, though it allows you to do many of the same things and is much easier to use. One of the best, however, is Swift Publisher. Fortunately, there are quite a few around, including Apple’s own Pages. For those jobs, we need an InDesign alternative. However, while QuarkXPress and InDesign are brilliant professional publishing tools, they’re overkill for those of use who just want to make a booklet, or create a poster or flyer. You may also need to select the paper tray, 1 for Tabloid, 3 for Letter. one side of the page is upside down, choose the “2-Sided Print Flip on Short Edge” option. ![]() If the prints are not “backed up” properly, i.e. Under Xerox Features, choose the “2-Sided Print” option. In the Setup area, be sure to click to Print Blank Printer Spreads.When you are ready to print your booket (which must contain a number of pages evenly divisible by 4) Choose File>Print Booklet….Options in the Print Booklet… and Print Settings area need to be chosen carefully, so that you achieve the proper orientation, so that both sides of the paper print in the same direction, so that you leave room for printers marks and bleed, if needed, and so on. For example, in an 8 page booklet, page 1 prints to the right of page 8, page 2 prints to the left of page 7, page 3 prints to the right of page 6, and page 4 prints to the left of page 5. The InDesign File>Print Booklet… command will automatically rearrange individual pages so that they print next to the appropriate page in a printers spread. If your booklet falls short of being a multiple of 4, you will need to add more pages, either blank or with additional content. ![]() For a 2-up saddle stitch, you will need a total number of pages in multiples of 4, or example, 4, 8, 12, 16, etc.
